Linux OS is provided as distribution, Unix-like OS based on Linux kernel. Every distribution, known as distro, has a large collection of software applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, media players, and database applications. There are over six hundred distros known nowadays, although only some of them are well known and widely used.
Most used distros are RedHat, Centos, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu etc.. All these distributions have the same core, Linux kernel, on-top of which everything else is developed. All of them can work as mainframe severs as well as graphical desktop environment with powerful windows mangers like KDE, Gnome etc..
